The primitive African pottery technique to build cocuchas, taught to their village by the Catholic Church 300 years ago to build utilitarian water and grain storage vessels, is still employed. Cocucha pottery is hand-formed, charcoal fired, and splashed with a variety of organic solutions to create the primitive yet refined surfaces for which they are known. The size, shape and surface of each pottery piece is totally hand-built and controlled by the hand and eye of the artist without the use of a wheel, mold or other mechanical device.
